Finally, after all these year’s I have found my much-needed filler to replace two of my favourite shows  “Sex and the City” and “Desperate House Wives”, and it’s HBO’s Big Little Lies but the difference is this show has a more fitting modern approach with a lot more sass! Big Little Lies is my new favourite show, and now that this mini-series is at an end I am gutted (So, please HBO, Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman hurry up and get me season 2)! I will try not to give out any big plot details in this review.

Big Little Lies is based on the book Big Little Lies by Australian Author Liane Moriarty. It’s about three mums; Madeline Mackenzie (Reece Witherspoon), Celeste Wright (Nicole Kidman) and Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodly) who are all linked together through their children and all attend the same elementary school in the coastal town of Monterey, California where the rich and elite all live. Although their lives seem to be perfect with the beautiful coastal settings, posh houses and they’re all beautiful and glamorous to boot, as we get more invested in the show we learn that each of these women’s lives is far from the perfect fairy tale that appears on the outside to the residents on Monterey.

From the very first episode, we understand that something terrible has happened, a suspicious death and from there onwards, every episode has the residents; such as teachers and other parents within the school telling the police what they think happened by being bitchy and dishing the dirt on the main cast and secondary cast, which is then followed by flashbacks, that unravels the show like a Russian Doll showing that each episode brings us closer and closer to the lead up to what happened rather than focusing a whole series on who did it and by the time we get to that fateful night, your left with an OMG moment.

The Main Characters of Big Little Lies

Madeline Martha Mackenzie (Reece Witherspoon)

Madeline is the twice married alpha-female socialite who you just can’t help but like, this is probably because who doesn’t love Reece Witherspoon? But in the series, she is kind of like Marmite people either love or hate her and she know’s this and it really doesn’t bother her in the slightest as she is not afraid to speak her mind even if that means crossing Corporate alpha mum Renata Kline. She has two daughters Abigail and Chloe with her first husband Nathan Carlson who cheated on her with Bonnie Carlson and as a product  of the affair, they have a child together called Skye, who is the same age as Chloe, Nathan and Madeline’s youngest daughter, which understandably Madeline is still a little unhappy about.

She has since remarried Ed Mackenzie who she loves, but he just doesn’t seem to excite her, as at the beginning of the series is very submissive to her which leads her on her own little destructive path in the show. Madeline is fiercely protective of the friends she has in her circle this meaning Celeste and Jane and is even more so protective of her daughters. She has a complicated relationship with her eldest daughter, Abigail who is a teenager and although clearly craves closeness with her mum feels pressured and that her mum is pushing her to do what Madeline was unable to do due to being a young mum and homemaker, Madeline seems very close with her youngest daughter Chloe as she literally is a little Madeline in the making.

Celeste Wright (Nicole Kidman)

Celeste is the former no-nonsense lawyer turned housewife, who from the outside has what looks like the perfect loving husband, good-looking wealthy businessmen Perry who dote’s on her and their twin boys Josh and Max. But Celeste’s life is literally just for show as her husband is violent and controlling and is very much like Jekyll and Hyde. Because she spends so much time pretending that nothing is wrong and trying to hide what is happening for the sake of her children and this means keeping this from everyone else including her best friend Madeline, she convinces herself things will get better, but when it comes down to her children she will always put them first!

Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodly)

Young, single mum Jane and her son Ziggy are new to Monterey and from the very first episode she is immediately befriended by Madeline and welcomed into the tight little circle of Madeline and Celeste. We learn that the reason for Jane moving to Monterey is so that she can face up to her demons, which affects her everyday life as well as her sons. Even on her first day, she manages to fall out with other playground Alpha mum Renata Kline over their children, which we soon see how tough she can really be over her son Ziggy and we also see how her friendship with Madeline and Celeste who actually turn out to be a support network for her.

Secondary Main Character’s

Renata and Bonnie although both played an important part of the series one plot and appear in the opening credits, they are not part of the main click and we don’t see enough of their stories to really connect with them, but I have no doubt in my mind that if we are lucky enough to get a season 2 we will get to learn and like these two characters.

Renata Klein (Laura Dern)

Renata Klein is the corporate mum of Annabel, who married the richest man in Monterey Gordon Klein who happens to own the company the Renata works for. Renata at the beginning is cast as the bitch mum of the playground and if your friends with Madeline you’re not friends with her as they have a temperamental relationship. She likes to feel in control and kind of feared, but for anyone who stands toe to toe with her gains her respect even if she doesn’t show it directly.

Bonnie Carlson (Zoë Kravitz)

Bonnie is the second wife of Madeline’s ex-husband Nathan who she has a daughter called  Skye with and who just happens to be the same age as Nathan and Madeline’s daughter Chloe. Bonnie is seemingly the perfect woman young, beautiful, talented and good at everything she does. She wants to be accepted by Madeline and is pushes Nathan to build bridges with Madeline, her husband Ed and his children. Once or twice Bonnie as felt the wrath of Madeline when it has come to her interfering with Madeline’s and Nathan’s children and there is more to learn about her if we get to a season 2.

The Cast

I personally think that this is such a dream cast from the main mums played by Reece Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodly, Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz to the husbands, children and the recurring cast members. Each cast member owns their characters and you just couldn’t imagine anyone else playing each of the main characters. This series gets a 10 out of 10 from me.

What we need answers to in Season 2

  • Who is the person with the flick metal lighter watching the mums at the end of season 1?
  • What will happen between Gordon Klein and cafe owner Tom?
  • What is it that we don’t know about Bonnie?
  • How will the relationship between the five mums develop in series 2?
  • From what I picked up Ed Mackenzie is a secret perv (what’s he into?)
  • I can’t tell any more without giving away major plot lines?

I was a HUGE fan of Desperate Housewives. So sad when it ended. This definitely sounds like a great show!
