I maybe a bit late on reviewing Marvel’s Jessica Jones, but I have been working out of the UK for 7 months and now I am back, I am catching up on my Netflix account.

If like me, you are a fan of the Marvel Universe then you really need to watch Jessica Jones! Jessica Jones is not your normal run of the mill family friendly Marvel TV Show, but its good and although it would never make it on to the big screen it’s suited as a TV series and from the very first episode hooks its viewers. I finished the whole show in a week (would have been sooner but I am in the process of writing my novel).

All the current Marvel TV Shows (Dare Devil, Marvel’s Agents of Shield and of course Jessica Jones) are cleverly interlinked with the Avengers Movies without solely focusing on The Avengers. For Instances people are aware of these people with special powers and there is mention a couple of times of the events that destroyed New York in The Avengers Assemble movie and of course the occasional mention of the Avengers and visual hints without being to obvious within the series and they are able to carry their own.

Now on with the main show, Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) is not your average run on the mill superhuman, she wasn’t born with powers, she didn’t volunteer to take part in a super soldier test (Like Steve Roger a.k.a Captain America or Natasha Romanov a.k.a The Black Widow), she got her powers through a tragic accident (much like Matt Murdoch a.k.a Dare Devil and Bruce Banner a.k.a Hulk) which would shape her damaged personality. Having had a brief stint at being a Superhero she decides that the life is not for her and tries to live a normal life with a normal job as a private investigator. Like nearly every american tv detective Jessica Jones has an alcohol problems and is a bit of a mess and much like any accidental hero she is very damaged emotionally, has a certain lack of a moral compass and is battling her own demons.

Living her normal life, Jessica Jone’s life is turned upside down by the appearance of her past demon another with the superhuman power of mind control, he is known as Kilgrave a.k. The Purpleman (David Tennant), who has an unhealthy obsession with Jessica and is hell-bent of having her, and if he can’t have her, he will make her suffer and feel unbelievable emotional pain. Kilgrave being a man who usually get’s his own way lacks empathy.

This current series doesn’t really delve a lot into Jessica’s past as a teenager from the point she gained her powers. Although we see the occasional build up into her Teenage years which connects her with her adopted sister/best friend Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor) through flashbacks, which explains her love for Trish and the build up storyline for season 2, as well as Trish’s back story. Instead there is a lot of flashback’s as to her relationship with Kilgrave and how it forges her present life and how she connects with another character such as another super human Luke Cage (Mike Colter) who has his own demons to battle.

The series is very dramatic and dark throughout start right through to the big build up in the end, which although you would expect some what to happen (no spoiler), it’s more of a shock how the face-off between Jones and Kilgrave ends and doesn’t disappoint.

Understanding the Characters:-

Jessica Jones – As the title suggests Jessica Jones is the main character of the show. She is not your average superhero, she is more of a retired superhero, a kind of anti-hero type. She has a hard shell and not your cheerleader perky type, she is the quick-witted type, thinks on her feet and is quite happy to hustle her way through life in the shadows as opposed to being in the spotlight. Behind that damaged exterior Jessica has a heart and just needs that push to become that hero when she is needed.

Her Powers/skills:

  • Superhuman strength
  • A high resistance to physical injury but can be hurt.
  • She can fly (although she does mention it’s more of being able to jump very high)
  • Hand to hand combat skills
  • Detective skills

Kilgrave a.k.a The Purple Man – Is probably one of the best villains in the Marvel universe, the reason behind this is because he is sinister and scary in a psychotic way. He has physic powers, which allows him to use mind control on his victims, including those with superhuman powers which makes him a very scary bad guy within the Marvel universe. Because he is used to getting his own way, this makes Kilgrave mentally and emotionally tapped, with a lack empathy for his victims and show’s no remorse for his actions.

His Powers

  • Mind Control

Patricia “Trish” Walker (Rachel Taylor) :- Is Jessica’s best friend and adopted sister and the only person in the world Jessica loves. She is a former child star who played a TV superhero called “Patsy” and having her mum as her agent caused mummy issue, and lead to her having an abusive relationship with her mother, which you will see through out the show. Trish as an adult is still a celebrity and host’s her own radio show, but feels some what defenceless which leads to her learning MMA so that she is not a weak link.

Luke Cage (Mike Colter): – Is another superhero from the Marvel Universe and is set for his very own spinoff. Luke Cage is a superhuman like Jessica and although slightly different from his comic book alter ego. He is connected to Jessica Jones through Kilgrave and the loss of his wife. There is a deep connection between him and Jessica, which will hopefully even out before Marvel release the TV show spinoffs The Defenders and Luke Cage in 2016. Luke Cage is a very complexed character in the show, he basically lives his life under the radar and the same time wants the superhero life is afraid to step up to the ball through fear of not being accepted, probably because of the events that are leading the Marvel Civil war with in the marvel Universe.

His Powers

  • Superhuman Strength
  • Durability
  • Hand to hand combat

Will Simpson (played by Will Travel): – Is a NYPD Sargent with a Military background with a dark past which will become evident in series one and will probably play a major role in series two of Jessica Jones. Will is connected to Jessica by Kilgrave who uses mind control on him. When finally out of Kilgraves control, he feels incredibly guilty for his actions, which also leads to some seriously bad decisions which will reestablish him with his dark military past and show’s him to be a very unreliable character for Jessica to depend on.

Malcolm Ducasse (played by Eka Darville): – When we first see Malcolm, he is a deadbeat drug addict struggling to get his life together and as series one progresses on, we see a nice and likeable side if Malcolm and how he progresses from deadbeat to unofficial sidekick to Jessica Jones. He also connected to Jessica originally by Kilgrave and as an effect he has his promising life destroyed.

Jeryn “Jeri” Hogarth (played by Carrie-Ann Moss): – is a no-nonsense attorney, who often employs Jessica Jones to do her investigations with regards to the clients that she represents. Jeri know’s about Jessica being a superhuman and has a some what a respect for Jessica, which often leads to Jeri’s  investigation into the hunt for Kilgrave. During the hunt for Kilgrave and the effects have consequences to both her personal and professional life.

Hope Shottlman (played by Erin Moriarty): – Is Jessica Jones turning point. She is one of Kilgraves victims in such a way and in a very similar way Jessica was one of Kilgraves victim and this angers Jessica and leads to Jessica fighting for  Hope and elevates Jessica’s character to once again be a hero.

The Cast (I am only going to discuss Krysten Ritter and David Tennant as they have the most screen time, but you can check out the other casts acting history by clicking on their names above which will link them to IMDb).

Krysten Ritter is perfectly cast as the post superhero turned sleuth Jessica Jones. She has the right amount of sass and attitude to pull the character off and I genuinely couldn’t imagine anyone else playing Jessica Jones. She has great screen presence with her fellow cast.

As an actress Krysten has had a long career in the industry where she has appeared as stand out memorable characters in shows such as “Breaking Bad”, “Don’t Trust The B**** In Apartment 23” to name a few. In 2016 we will see Krysten revise her role as Jessica Jones in season 2 of Jessica Jones as well as spin-off show The Defenders.

David Tennant fans of Doctor Who, will be very shocked about how well David plays a bad guy. In fact he plays it so well that throughout the show David’s acting as a psychotic but very charismatic bad guy leaves the audience feeling somewhat uneasy (which is what you are supposed to feel with a bad guy).

Overall opinion of Jessica Jones Season 1

If you are not a fan of spandex superhero’s but like sci-fi and action this is a show for you, If you are a fan of the Marvel universe or anything super hero then you are missing out if you haven’t watched this show on Netflix. This show is addictive and makes you want more. It’s also nice to see that Marvel are exploring more of the female character in more detail and making them the lead as opposed to make them the sidekick.
